Fundamental Chemistry Experiment Center

The Fundamental Chemistry Experiment Center (FCEC) is one of the ten experiment centers in Kunming University of Science and Technology"KMUST",it is a research center which incorporate experimentation teaching and laboratory management. It offers fundamental experimental lessons such as general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry and organic chemistry for all undergraduates whose specialties are related with chemistry, and also set up special experimental courses for the students in the specialty of Applied Chemistry. 

Fundamental Chemistry Experiment Center was founded in August 2001, it was established to replace the original inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and analytical chemistry experimental departments after a restructuring of management system. Our center is operating entirely within the secondary model management of our university and college, is one of practicing platforms in Kunming University of Science and Technology. In October 2009, the center has overall moved to Chenggong Campus of KMUST.
Since 2001, with such support from our university, the development of the center embarked on a new level, all the efforts at reform in teaching content, methods, techniques, systems and other aspects of comprehensive reform achieved obvious effect.
There are 12 full-time staff and 30 part-time staff in the center, including 4 professors and 25 associate professors.
The fundamental chemistry experiment center building has construction areas of 11000 square meters and the saleable areas are of 6000 square meters, and more than 1000 students can be served at different experiment teaching at the same time.

The design and rational overall arrangement of FCEC was represented by a green and low-carbon thought, which was equipped with good lighting, ventilation and drainage water supply system.
There are four pipeline serves all the drainage water supply system .And the water treatment device fixed in the cellar can be satisfied distilled water supply. After the chemical treatment, chemical waste is finally enters wastewater reuse system.
 
Our experiment center has already installed four kinds of ventilation, which are natural ventilation, ventilation for top, hood ventilation and testing table ventilation. Harmful gases must be drawn out by exhaust treatment equipments.
The Center has three core laboratories, i.e. basic chemistry, applied chemistry, precise instruments, moreover, there are some other ancillary facilities like virtual simulation laboratory, teaching research division and computer lab.
Fundamental laboratories are situated from the first floor to the third floor of the building ,there are 22 standardized laboratories, include thermodynamics, dynamics, electrochemistry, inorganic elements,inorganic synthesis, organic synthesis, Separation of organics, multifunctional organic, surface and colloid balance room, chemical analysis, photochemical analysis and other auxiliary laboratory. The labs above are sufficient for the teaching needs of general Chemistry experiment, inorganic Chemistry experiment, inorganic and analytical chemistry experiment, analytical chemistry experiment, hydrochemical analyse chemistry experiment, physical chemistry experiment and organic chemistry experiment. These standardized laboratories can accommodate 560 students being taught.

include dynamics, surface Chemistry, corrosion prevention, chemical separation and enrichment, complex material analysis ,natural product chemistry. The labs above are sufficient for the scientific research requirements of three major Orientation, which are electrochemistry, analysis and testing and natural product. These standardized laboratories can accommodate 320 students being taught.
 
The precision instruments for analysis include atomic emission spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, UV-visible spectrophotometry, infrared spectrum, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, thermogravimetry analysis,Integrated electrochemical test , sensolytics SECM, microwave synthesis and extraction, the precision instruments laboratory number 12,which can accommodate more than120 students have been taught.
 
Since 2005, the update, supplement and laboratory renovation gained achievement under the support of construction project of experiment centers in Kunming University of Science and Technology"KMUST",new campus construction project of Chenggong and the coconstruction project by the central and local governments set up. Existing fixed assets 12000000,the equipments costs more than 50000 include electrochemical workstation, uvvisible spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscope, Inductive coupled plasma

                                      

emission spectrometer(1set), flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer, Infrared spectrometer, HPLC, gas chromatograph, Single-mode microwave synthesis system, etc. The equipment utilization for experiment items all exceeds 95%.

                                   

Experiment center offers basic experiment courses in species diversity, cover 25 majors of 6500 undergraduates from 10 different colleges. Experiment center also offers basic experiment courses and professional courses for applied chemistry specialty, and the compliment of graduation thesis. The common and core compulsory courses is 32 in sum, task quantity reach to 220000 total class hours. To be effective, our center offer services, the instruments can use the existing resource more effectual and shared freely.
At present, the published school textbooks include modern science of basic chemical experiment, analytical chemistry experimentation, physical chemistry experimentation and chemistry experimentation for first year of college. There are other course adopts manuscript of General Chemistry, inorganic chemistry,

                               

Analytical chemistry and organic Chemistry written by the teacher themselves.

                            

Our center will restructure the former experimental course and items develop a distinctive chemical experiment course named college engineering chemistry course, we will further expand the scope of its opened, turn these lab resources to advantage and provide further access for social services.
